Turkish Young Academy Contributes to Academic Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The “Academic Integrity Symposium,” organized in collaboration between the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), was held in Ankara. Turkish Young Academy also actively contributed to and participated in the program, which addressed the evolving understanding of ethics in the scientific world alongside the rise of artificial intelligence.

During the symposium, topics such as ethics in academic publishing, research integrity, and the responsibilities brought about by new technologies were discussed in depth. In his opening remarks, TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker emphasized that academic integrity forms the foundation of science, noting that the erosion of merit and trust directly affects the scientific structure.

Speaking at the program, Turkish Young Academy President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mürsel Doğrul highlighted the role of science academies in the age of artificial intelligence. He stated that academies are not only institutions that support scientific production but have also become active actors in global science diplomacy.

President Doğrul pointed out that artificial intelligence is transforming academic production processes and that, alongside this transformation, the concept of academic integrity is also being reshaped. Emphasizing that common ethical standards have not yet been established at the international level, Doğrul underlined the need for all stakeholders in the scientific community to develop shared norms.

It was also noted during the symposium that while AI-supported scientific production increases speed and efficiency, it also brings risks such as loss of originality and ethical violations. In this context, the importance of establishing common ethical principles to maintain trust in academia was once again emphasized. It was further stated that TÜBA and Turkish Young Academy closely follow the evolving science and policy frameworks in the age of artificial intelligence and actively contribute to the process.
