Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Barut was born on October 1, 1988, in Trabzon. He completed his undergraduate studies in 2013 as the top graduate of the Chemistry Department at the Faculty of Science, Karadeniz Technical University (KTU). In 2016, he received two master’s degrees from the Graduate Schools of Science and Health Sciences at KTU. He completed his PhD in 2020 in the Department of Biochemistry in Pharmacy at the KTU Graduate School of Health Sciences. Dr. Barut served as a Research Assistant at the KTU Faculty of Pharmacy between 2014 and 2020, and as an Assistant Professor between 2021 and 2022. Since 2022, he has been working as an Associate Professor in the same faculty. His research focuses on the toxic/phototoxic effects of photosensitizer compounds used in photodynamic therapy on various cancer cell lines, mechanisms of cell death, and key signaling pathways in cancer biology. He also conducts studies on enzyme kinetics, biological activity, and molecular docking of synthetic or isolated active compounds. Dr. Barut has received the KTU Young Scientist Award in Health Sciences three times, the Prof. Dr. Nazmi Özer Science Award from the Turkish Biochemical Society three times, and the Research Incentive Award from the Chemists Association. He was awarded the Turkish Pharmacists’ Association Academy Encouragement Award in 2021, the TÜBA-GEBİP Ahmet-Nezahat Keleşoğlu Special Award in Pharmacy in 2024, and the KTU Health Science Award in 2025. He has authored over 100 articles in international indexed journals, and his publications have received more than 1,900 citations.
